The evolving role of academic libraries in higher education: A comprehensive review and analysis
Authors

Abstract
This paper presents a detailed literature review and analysis of the transformative role of academic libraries within the ecosystem of higher education. Moving beyond traditional conceptions as passive repositories, modern academic libraries are dynamic, service-oriented partners in pedagogy, research, and community engagement. This review synthesizes empirical studies, theoretical frameworks, and institutional reports from 2010-2024 to delineate five core functional areas: 1) Enablers of Student Success and Learning; 2) Architects of Information and Digital Fluency; 3) Essential Partners in the Research Lifecycle; 4) Leaders in Digital Transformation and Space Curation; and 5) Champions of Inclusivity and Scholarly Equity. The analysis incorporates quantitative and qualitative data, presented in synthesized tables, to illustrate impact and adoption trends. It further examines persistent challenges such as budgetary constraints, assessment complexities, and evolving skill demands. The paper concludes by projecting future trajectories, including the deepening integration of artificial intelligence, the mainstreaming of Open Educational Resources (OER), and the library’s role in promoting sustainable scholarship. The evidence affirms that the academic library’s value is increasingly defined by its active, collaborative, and innovative contributions to the overarching mission of its parent institution.
